After 15 years of dedicated service, Owen Cligg, Trading Manager at United Oilseeds, officially retires today, marking the end of a remarkable career that has significantly shaped the cooperative. Since joining in 2009, Owen has played a pivotal role in building and strengthening United Oilseeds’ trading network, ensuring that farmer members receive the best possible outcomes. Over his tenure, he has overseen the trading of 7.5 million tonnes of key commodities, including peas, beans, linseed, oats, rye, and oilseed rape.
Reflecting on his career, Owen shared, “It’s been an honour to serve UK farmers for the past 15 years. Naturally, leaving work after so long will feel strange, but I’m looking forward to new pursuits. Local history, gardening, and spending time in South America with my Chilean wife are high on my to-do list. I will miss the camaraderie of the United Oilseeds team, who always strive to deliver the best for our members.”
James Warner, Managing Director of United Oilseeds, praised Owen’s contribution, saying, “Owen’s departure is a significant moment for the cooperative. His deep industry knowledge, combined with his sharp wit and unique sense of humour, has left an indelible mark. While we are sad to see him go, we wish him a fulfilling and well-deserved retirement.”
Stepping into the role of Commodity Trading Manager is Nick Hobson, who joined United Oilseeds in a long handover earlier this year. Nick brings a wealth of experience, having worked at Cargill from 2001 to 2006, initially as a Worldwide Feed Barley Trader and EU Grains Trader in Geneva. Later, he took on the role of Head Trader for the Oilseed Team in Melbourne, overseeing trading and procurement for three crush plants.
Following his tenure at Cargill, Nick co-founded Sun Commodities, a Geneva-based biofuels brokerage, which he successfully sold in 2014. Since then, he has managed a consultancy business and established several trading and brokerage enterprises, while balancing family life.
Commenting on his new role, Nick said, “It’s a pleasure to join a company like United Oilseeds, where you can make a meaningful difference every day. The cooperative’s excellent reputation and strong position in the market were significant draws, and I’m excited to work closely with our farmer members across the UK.”
James Warner expressed confidence in Nick’s appointment, stating, “Nick’s exceptional experience and deep understanding of commodity trading make him the ideal candidate for this role. With a lengthy handover period from Owen, we have ensured a smooth transition to maintain the outstanding service our members expect.”
United Oilseeds stands poised for a new chapter under Nick Hobson’s leadership, continuing its mission of supporting UK farmers with expertise, innovation, and dedication.
